چکیده

Application protocols employing the publish-subscribe messaging pattern provide many advantages for IoT scenarios. For instance, the Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) tolerates long breaks in connectivity and provides low energy consumption. However, there is lack of research on the behavior of such protocols under challenging scenarios. Preliminary studies show that mobility affect the operation of such solutions, resulting in jitter variability and decrease of performance due to packet retransmission. This work aims at providing adaptive features to application protocols under the publish-subscribe paradigm. A special study case is the handover in IEEE 802.11 in which mobility and packet retransmissions are expected during a short period of time.

HoPP: Robust and Resilient Publish-Subscribe for an Information-Centric Internet of Things

This paper revisits NDN deployment in the IoT with a special focus on the interaction of sensors and actuators. Such scenarios require high responsiveness and limited control state at the constrained nodes. We argue that the NDN request-response pattern which prevents data push is vital for IoT networks. We contribute HoP-and-Pull (HoPP), a robust publish-subscribe scheme for typical IoT scenar...

EMMA: Distributed QoS-Aware MQTT Middleware for Edge Computing Applications

Publish–subscribe middleware is a popular technology for facilitating device-to-device communication in largescale distributed Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. However, the stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements imposed by many applications cannot be met by cloud-based solutions alone. Edge computing is considered a key enabler for such applications. Client mobility and dynamic reso...

Publish Subscribe on Large-Scale Dynamic Topologies: Routing and Overlay Management

Content-based publish-subscribe is emerging as a communication paradigm able to meet the demands of highly dynamic distributed applications, such as those made popular by mobile computing and peer-to-peer networks. Nevertheless, the available systems implementing this communication model are still unable to cope efficiently with dynamic changes to the topology of their distributed dispatching i...

A Survey of Communication Protocols for Internet-of-Things and Related Challenges of Fog and Cloud Computing Integration

The fast increment in the number of IoT (Internet of Things) devices is accelerating the research on new solutions to make cloud services scalable. In this context, the novel concept of fog computing as well as the combined fog-to-cloud computing paradigm is becoming essential to decentralize the cloud, while bringing the services closer to the end-system. This paper surveys on the application ...

Ensuring Low-Latency and Scalable Data Dissemination for Smart-City Applications

Low latency and scalable data dissemination is a critical requirement for many IoT applications, e.g., smart city applications, which are often realized by using the publish/subscribe communication paradigm. Ensuring low latency requires effective load balancing of the publish/subscribe topics across the different publishers and subscribers. To that end we present ongoing work on a data-driven ...
